Oils scalp massages have changed the dynamic of my hair. Oils have taken my hair to the next level. In the past, I had down the whole “don’t use heat tools” and “trim your hair whenever you have split ends,” but once I began using oils in my hair, I began to notice a huge difference!

There are so many different oils out there that you can use. When I first started my hair journey, I remember I looked up every oil I could think of in order to help my hair grow longer, fuller, and thicker. After a year of trial and error, I’ve narrowed it down to the following oils.

Oils I use for my curly hair routine! Oil for curly hair

1. Jamaican Black Castor Oil

If you were to look up the best oils for hair growth, I can almost guarantee that the first one to pop up will be Jamaican Black Castor Oil, or JBCO for short. Jamaican black castor oil is a branch off the castor oil family. Castor oil derives from the castor plant. While clear or pure castor oil are fresh pressed seeds, Jamaican black castor oil is when the castor seeds are roasted (hence, the reason for JBCO’s darkness), pounded, then boiled before being pressed. This oil will moisturize, thicken, and strengthen your hair, which in turn causes your hair to grow more rapidly.

A word of caution: JBCO is all the rage in the curly girl world, and companies know that. It is important to make sure that when you purchase Jamaican black castor oil that you read the ingredients. Companies will sometime purchase clear or pure castor oil, then dye it, giving it the JBCO look.

My favorite company to buy JBCO (and really, any oils) is Tropic Isle Living. The ingredients are natural and organic.

A little goes a long way. When applying it to your scalp, you only need a little bit on your fingertips, then focus on the areas on your scalp where your hair is thinning the most.

*TIP*-When massaging your scalp, tip your head downwards to increase blood flow in order to help your hair grow faster.

2. Red Pimento Oil

This oil is hair crack. It contains Jamaican black castor oil, extra virgin coconut oil, wheat germ oil, lemon oil, lavender oil, and pimento oil. This oil will disinfect and cleanse your scalp, reduces breakage and split ends, stimulates hair growth, and adds shine to brittle hair.

After I put in a little bit of JBCO onto my scalp, I then help myself to a lot of the red pimento oil. I apply a generous amount to my scalp, then massage with my fingertips.

3. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the best and most popular oils used in the curly hair industry. It is amazing for your hair because it is able to penetrate deep into the hair follicles. This oil promotes a healthy scalp by cleaning out any dandruff, lice, or insect bites. Just like the red pimento oil, it helps reduce breakage and split ends while also adding shine, softness, and luster to your hair. Plus, it smells amazing, so that is always a bonus!

Make sure that the oil is organic, unrefined coconut oil in order to see the full effect.

After I add the red pimento oil and the JBCO to my scalp, I warm up the coconut oil in a little bowl for about one minute. Once the oil is melted, I let it sit for about a minute or two so that it can cool down.

*TIP* You DON’T want to apply hot oil to your scalp/hair. Doing so can cause damage to the hair. But you do want to make sure that it is warm.

After letting it cool, I dip the ends of my hair into the bowl, then plunge the rest of my hair into the bowl before tipping it upside down onto my head so that all of my hair and my entire scalp is saturated by the oil. I then make sure that some of the oil gets to my scalp as well and massage that in.

After applying each separate oils to my hair and scalp, I cover my head with a plastic shower cap, then put a night cap on and let it sit overnight.

*TIP* It is not necessary that you wear the oil overnight. I personally just like to because I feel like I get the full effect of the oils. If you do not want to wear them overnight, I recommend that you keep the oil on your scalp at least 10-20 minutes while massaging it before washing it out in the shower.

4. Moroccan Argan Oil

Argan oil is a great moisturizer for your hair because it contains fatty acids, antioxidants, and Vitamin E. It also adds shine and reduce breakage.

In the morning, I shower and wash out the oils from my scalp, apply my daily products, then let my hair air dry. Once my hair is dry, I apply a dropper of Moroccan Argan Oil into my hands, rub my hands together, then scrunch it into my hair. It adds shine to my hair, making it appear youthful and gives it a healthy glow.

5. Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree essential oil helps to unclog the hair follicles and nourish the roots.

Once my hair is dry, I just put a few drops of the Tea Tree oil into my fingertips, then massage my scalp one last time.
